They realized they might be able to shave off even more weight and improve performance by replacing the aluminum braces with a continuous-fiber composite if they could find a material with an exceptional strength- to-weight ratio, high flexural stiffness, good torsional rigidity, and superior fatigue strength. THE IMPACT Finding ways to reduce weight is a high priority for vehicle manufacturers, because lighter weight corresponds to better fuel efficiency for gas-powered vehicles and more miles per charge for electric cars.

Traditionally aluminum or zinc aluminum alloys (Zamak) are used for heat sinks due to their high thermal conductivity, which was also the case at Elausa. However, compared with engineered thermoplastics, these materials have a relatively high density, are more complicated and energy intense to process, and may suffer from corrosion. THE IMPACT Optimizing the part design for Therma-Tech thermoplastics and simulating its temperature distribution and thermal dissipation confirmed its thermal performance would be similar or slightly better compared to the metal originally used.

THE CHALLENGE PVC sheet and profile extrusion processors were looking for ways to hit lower density targets while maintaining a high-quality cell structure. The lower the density that processors used, the more they conceded a high- quality cell structure. THE IMPACT As tests and trials were conducted, it was shown that the Excelite dispersion interacted more intimately and consistently with PVC resin, essentially becoming part of the PVC resin matrix.

Since 2013, the executive leadership selects 14–16 high per forming, high potential associates each year to par ticipate in the NextGen leadership development program. Dyneema® began as an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMPE fiber). We have completed a water risk evaluation of our manufacturing locations to identify which of them may be impacted by future water scarcity issues. 28% of facilities are in areas currently classified by the World Resources Institute Aqueduct Water Risk Tool as being extremely high or high for baseline water stress.
